The bans were imposed in the first round after Valve shut down the VACnet workaround in CS2
Хакери Rage почали отримувати блокування ще в перших раундах. Valve закрила обхід VACnet, який позбавляв античіт-систему даних понад рік.

The community noticed this even before Valve documented it. On July 28, dataminer and streamer aqua posted that VACnet appeared to be working again and that spin-botters were being banned after a few rounds. In Valve’s July 29 patch, they confirmed the cause: a bug allowed cheaters to completely bypass VACnet, and it has been fixed.

The speed of the bans speaks volumes. VACnet had a number of unresolved issues with flagged accounts and was finally able to take action.

What the workaround did

CS2’s VACnet analyzes player behavior on the server and flags patterns that aren’t generated by human players. The workaround never surpassed this analysis. It completely blocked behavioral data from reaching the system, so no patterns were ever analyzed, and no alerts were ever triggered.

Valve’s patch note consists of a single sentence: “Fixed a bug that allowed malicious players to bypass VACnet processing.” For a company that usually says nothing about the inner workings of its anti-cheat systems, this is considered a rare display of transparency.

That’s also all we’ve been given. Valve hasn’t described the mechanism, so the community is piecing together the fix based on ban patterns and the panic on cheat-rating forums. Anti-cheat analyst Matt, who posts as @VACdeluxe and is widely known for his work on competitive integrity, explained how it works following the patch’s release, and noted that Valve has not publicly acknowledged a similar exploit in patch notes for years.

That one sentence—and that’s all Valve has given us. The community is piecing together the rest based on ban patterns and panic on cheat-related forums, and much of the best explanation comes from creators rather than developers:

The ban notice now mentions VACnet

Post-patch bans specifically identify VACnet rather than displaying the generic VAC text. Hawk Live documented this change back in the May 2026 update, so it predated this patch. For obvious reasons, more players are now seeing it.

Valve is transforming VACnet from a background process that powers VAC into a visible enforcement layer that players can see. This wording is part of that shift.

The problem of false positives hasn’t gone away

Valve has a track record here. In January 2026, they had to mass-unban accounts after a wave of bans swept through legitimate players.

Behavioral analysis that identifies a malicious “rage hacker” in the second round can also flag unusual but honest play. The faster-acting CS2 VACnet increases the cost of an incorrectly calibrated threshold, and no one outside of Valve can verify where those thresholds are set. If you are mistakenly caught up in the next wave, the only recourse will be the same appeal process that took weeks in January.

The bracket has been set for the middle of the qualifiers

The bracket for the StarLadder StarSeries Fall 2026 tournament in North and South America will run through August 2, and the main offline event, with a $500,000 prize pool, will take place from September 17 to 20. Europe already wrapped up its series on July 26, with Aurora and Magic securing the two spots.

The conclusion of the mid-season qualifier will not clean up the professional CS2 scene, as top-tier pros are not the audience for which VACnet was designed. However, online qualifiers are much closer to the player pool than the LAN stage, and this is where this fix could make a difference.

The rest of the July 29 patch

Otherwise, a minor update:

  • Cologne 2026 Major ranking series stickers are now on sale; the store will be open until September 29

  • Map scripts: Fixed a bug that prevented scripts from loading in Tool Mode until manually recompiled.

  • Maps: Boulder, Fachwerk, and Shelter have been updated to the latest Community Workshop versions.

  • Miscellaneous: Fixed a bug that prevented earning experience from the collection catalog for the “Dead Hand” collection

What to Watch for Over the Next Two Weeks

There are two things worth keeping an eye on. Will Valve release another round of rollbacks? This will tell you whether the resolved backlog is producing false positives. Will the ban rate drop? Cheat vendors have sent a clear response.

They’re already working on one. Valve has bought itself some breathing room here, and the only open question is how long it will last.
