The Esports Nations Cup has been postponed to 2027
Всього за три місяці до запланованого початку турніру, Кубок кіберспортивних націй 2026 року було перенесено на 2027 рік. Ось короткий підсумок.

With just three months to go before the scheduled start date, the 2026 Esports Nations Cup has been officially postponed to 2027. Why did the tournament organizers make this decision, and what does it mean for the industry? Let’s take a look.

What is the Esports Nations Cup (ENC)?

The Esports World Cup (EWC) debuted in 2024, bringing together more than twenty esports titles in a single month-long tournament festival. The event, funded by the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) and the Esports Foundation, takes place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The host country rotates every few years. In addition to its unprecedented scale, the EWC is notable for having one of the largest prize pools in esports history. Its total prize pool in 2026 exceeded $75 million. During the EWC, esports organizations register as partner clubs and compete in several games. The tournament crowns the strongest team of the year.

The Esports Foundation announced the Esports Nations Cup two years after the first EWC, intending to make it a sort of sister tournament. However, there was one key difference: instead of registering as franchise teams, individual countries fielded esports rosters to compete in the tournament, following the model of the Olympics.

This new format has already secured partnerships with well-known players from around the world. For example, VALORANT pro TenZ was part of Team Canada for 2026. In the League of Legends scene, viewers were also expecting players from HLE, GEN.G, and T1 to play together on the South Korean national team. In other words, the industry would have had the opportunity to see longtime rivals working together to represent their country’s common flag.

ENC Postponed to 2027

On August 18, 2026, the Esports Nations Cup announced that its inaugural event would be postponed to 2027. The tournament published a press release on its website detailing the situation. It explained that the decision was made “after a continuous assessment of the broader regional situation and following consultations with key stakeholders.”

The Esports Nations Cup was originally scheduled to take place in November 2026. The postponement comes just three months before the planned start date.

Why has the ENC been postponed?

The ENC decision is primarily related to regional hosting challenges and the desire to properly execute large-scale event plans. “Given the unprecedented international scale of the ENC and the uncertainty caused by the broader regional situation, [the Esports Foundation] believes that postponing the inaugural tournament to November 2027 is a responsible decision to ensure the certainty and stability expected by national teams, publishers, partners, and fans.”

The 2026 competition was scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The ENC states that “Saudi Arabia remains fully capable of hosting events, and major sports and entertainment events will continue as planned.” However, the current geopolitical instability in the Middle East could pose challenges for hosting an international tournament. More than 100 countries have been granted partner status to participate in the event. As a result, this would make it one of the largest international esports events in history.

Ralph Reichert, CEO of the Esports Foundation, stated:

“The decision to relocate the Esports Nations Cup was not an easy one […] Feedback from national team partners, publishers, players, and communities around the world has shown us just how much potential this competition has. We owe it to them to host the first ENC under the right conditions and at the level this concept deserves. Holding the tournament in Riyadh next year does not change our commitments. We will continue to invest in our national team partners, collaborate with publishers, and build the national ecosystems that are already taking shape around the competition. The work continues, and our ambitions for the ENC remain unchanged.”

What does this mean for esports?

First and foremost, the Esports World Cup and the Esports Nations Cup represent a growing market for esports tournaments. These events are held on a scale comparable to traditional physical sports and also receive significant government involvement.

The postponement of the Esports World Cup will not cancel the main tournament: The Esports Foundation plans to “continue to work closely with national team partners, publishers, and other stakeholders to provide clarity on the updated competition calendar, qualification paths, and other implications of the new schedule.”

When will the first Esports Nations Cup take place?

As of now, it appears that the ENC plans to launch the tournament in November 2027. However, the exact dates of the tournament remain unknown. This is confirmed by the tournament’s updated website, whose homepage features a banner reading “November 2027.”
