Rooney was accused of smoking and drinking during an England training camp

Former England national team forward Andy Carroll made a sensational claim about Wayne Rooney in his new autobiography, *Owning It*.
According to Carroll, during national team training camps around 2010–2011, Rooney would invite teammates to his room, where he smoked cigarettes, used snus, and drank beer.
Carroll claims that Rooney’s room allegedly contained packs of cigarettes, cases of beer, and bottles of wine, all delivered by hotel staff. Gradually, other players joined them.
“No one got drunk. For Wayne, it was just a way to break up the monotony with a few drinks instead of lying in his room staring at the wall,” Carroll recalls.
All of this took place during the tenure of Fabio Capello, who was known for his extremely strict discipline with the England national team.
Rooney flatly rejected this version of events: “I don’t usually comment on the lies written about me, but this time I’ll respond. Andy knows that we hardly ever spoke outside of soccer. As for the story about drinking on the England national team—it’s a complete fabrication. I don’t know where it came from. It’s disappointing.”
Carroll also spoke about internal problems within the England national team at the time. According to him, the team was divided into a “northern” and a “southern” group, some players barely spoke to one another, and were even reluctant to pass the ball to their teammates during training.
Andy Carroll’s autobiography, *Owning It*, will be released on September 24.
